What is a Tea Kettle and Why Do You Need One?

A tea kettle is a pot that is used to boil water to for tea. It is usually made of metal, plastic, or glass.

Tea kettles are used as an alternative to boiling water in a pot on a stovetop. This is because they are quicker and easier than using a regular pot on the stovetop. They are also more convenient because they can be carried from room to room with relative ease.

Electric kettles are popular because there are even more convenient that regular tea kettles. You just plug it in, fill it with water, press a button and you have boiling water in a few minutes.

How to Choose the Best Tea Kettle for Your Needs

The tea kettle is the most important kitchen appliance in my opinion. It’s a must-have for any tea drinker.

A tea kettle is a type of pot that is used to heat or boil water to make tea, coffee, or other hot beverages. There are several types of kettles of which electric, stovetop, clay, and iron (tetsubin) kettles are the most common types. You can use an electric kettle to boil water in a matter of minutes, while the other kettles take a bit longer.

Depending on what kind of experience you’re looking for, you should pick the right one for your needs. A stovetop kettle is a good in-between option; it requires more work than electric kettles, but not as much work as boiling water in a clay kettle over an open fire or charcoal.

There are many more factors that you should consider before buying a tea kettle: material, size, design, and more. You can go as far as you want but beware of the rabbit hole…

Electric kettle

An electric kettle is easy to use because you fill it with water, plug it in, and press a button. It’s nice when you want a warm cup of tea, but you don’t have a lot of time.

An electric kettle is easy to use while using an iron or clay kettle requires more work to drink a nice cup of tea. However, clay and iron kettles offer a more authentic experience of how people in Asia have been making tea for centuries: heating water in a clay or iron pot over an open fire.

Electric kettles are less authentic but have the advantage of heating water really quickly.

Stovetop kettle

A stovetop kettle requires a bit more work but is still fairly easy to use. You fill it with water, put it on a stovetop/cooker, and wait until the water has the desired temperature. It usually takes a bit longer than an electric kettle but is still quite fast.

Stovetop kettles can be made from a variety of materials, but they are usually made from metal because it’s durable.

Clay and iron tea kettles

Clay and iron tea kettles require the most amount of work/attention because most people use these to boil water over an open fire or charcoal. These tea kettles have been used in the Chinese Tea Ceremony for centuries and offer the most authentic experience.

That is why they require a bit of effort to handle. If you are into Gong Fu Cha, which is the name for the Chinese Tea Ceremony, these kettles offer the best possible experience.

How to Use a Tea Kettle for Brewing Tea

There are many ways to use a tea kettle for making tea. It’s important that you know that a kettle is used to boil water while a teapot is used to infuse tea leaves. Below are 5 simple steps you can follow to brew a nice cup of tea:

  1. Fill your kettle with water
  2. Plug it in, put it on a stovetop, or place it over a flame/fire
  3. Wait until the water has the desired temperature
  4. Pour boiling water from the kettle into a cup containing loose-leaf or bagged tea. It should be noted that not all teas need boiling water, some can be brewed with just hot water or even cold water.

Brewing with a teapot: A teapot can also be used to brew tea by putting the desired amount of tea leaves in a pot and filling it with boiling water. The pot is then left to steep for the desired length of time before being poured into cups and served.

How to Clean Your Tea Kettle and Keep it in Good Condition

Tea kettles are one of the most important pieces of equipment that you need to have in your kitchen. They are mostly used to boil water, especially for making tea. Keeping your kettle clean is important because a good tea kettle costs quite a bit of money.

You should always start by cleaning the outside of the kettle with a damp cloth or sponge and dry it thoroughly with a towel or dishcloth. This will remove any tea stains on the outside of your kettle.

After boiling some water, it’s good practice to pour out any water that is left and leave the lid off the kettle. This way, the remaining water evaporates and your kettle will be dry in no time.

It will prevent rust if you have an iron tea kettle (tetsubin) and will slow down limescale forming on the inside of your kettle; especially electric kettles.

If you have an electric kettle and you see limescale building up, it’s a good idea to read our guide on how to clean an electric kettle.
