I started my new job last week so everything is almost back to normal. Tea is something that I definitely need to make time for now, but it offers a variety of benefits so it is worth it! The tea I am drinking today is the Yesheng Hong Cha from Moychay.nl. It’s one of those teas I have fond memories of because if its distinct flavor.

The people at Moychay.nl were kind enough to send me some samples to try their latest teas. One of the samples is the Yesheng Hong Cha. The tea comes from Hailing, which is located in Fengqing County.

Wild tea trees were harvested for these leaves and the trees are at least 150 years old.

If I hadn’t known this was a yesheng hong cha, I would have guessed it by smelling the leaves. The typical yesheng sweetness is present in combination with a baked maltiness.

I used 4.2g for a 100ml zisha teapot I dedicated to hong cha. I started with a 15s infusion and increased the length by 5 seconds every infusion.

The tea session started as I expected. There is a fruity sweetness at the surface with a slight maltiness in the undertone. The sweetness lingers for a while after the infusion.

It slowly became less about the sweetness at the surface, but more about sweetness on a deeper level. It was not really in my face, but I felt it more under the radar. Even though it was less prominent, it was more powerful and fuller in taste.

After several infusions, I got hit by a clean sweetness in the aftertaste. It was as if I had just eaten a piece of candy. This was noticeable in the second half of the session and was not something I expected.

Overall, great tea session with a nice tea that reminded me of other yesheng teas I have had in the past. Definitely worth a try if you like sweeter hong cha, especially at this price point (€11.20 for 30g).

You can try the tea over here if you’re interested.
